Ben and Jerry Eco-college Now Online

For the past few years ice-cream makers Ben and Jerry have held a Climate Change College in Europe – a program which aims to inspire 18-30 year olds to deliver business orientated solutions to Climate Change and have fun; and now they have launched a series of online modules for everyone to study.

Each year eight students from France, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK are selected to take part in the College, which consists of a nine month business mentoring program, a grant to launch a climate change project and a three week, carbon neutral, scientific field trip to the Arctic, to enable students to get a first-hand knowledge of work being done to combat climate change.

Selection for the College is extremely tough, three finalists from each country are invited to Brussels to present an idea for a climate change solution project that not only reduces CO2 emissions but successfully changes behavior, with the winning projects given support to get off the ground.

The new online college, however, is available for everyone, although also aimed at European students. The online college consists of six modules, each based on lectures in the real Climate College, and each taking approximately one hour to complete and culminating in a quiz. Achieve the required score in the quiz and you’ll be able to download a certificate of merit for each module, and pass all six modules to receive a certificate of completion.

Modules include climate change, Fairtrade vs Food miles, the polar regions and economics, and contain a hefty amount of information on each subject to provide a decent introductory knowledge on each area. If you get tired of studying, however, the website also features a few fun, environment related games, such as Belching Bovines and Climate Jackpot.

Very clever of them to design a program that not only focuses on addressing climate change, but uses the most eco-friendly delivery system possible. New research out of Europe shows that online education uses about 90% less energy than traditional college degree programs. As if I needed another reason to buy that pint of Americone Dream.

Way to go Ben and Jerrys! I have always supported their practices and now this adds one more reason to support them!
