Default Do you celebrate Earth Day?

Do you celebrate Earth Day?

When I lived in Kyoto, Japan there was always something done on Earth Day - people would clear litter from the river bank, and then there would be music and a picnic.

I did get the impression however that this was instigated largely by the westerners living in Kyoto, as the people who took part were mainly American, Canadian, Australian or from the EU, plus some Japanese.

Here in the UK, I never really hear of things being done for Earth Day.

I did a web search to try and find out when it is, and find two different dates given: March 21 and April 22. So if you celebrate Earth Day where you live, which one is it? I'd be interested to hear what things you do on this day too.

For me it's always just been another day. I never remember when it is.

I don't really understand the point of Earth Day? Do people clean up their streets, dim the lights, recycle etc on one specific day and forget everything the next? I mean I understand it's about raising awareness but I think that requires more than ONE day. Maybe like Earth month or at least "week" where the government would impose a 20 minute litter clean up for everyone during the work hours at different times during the day. I would think something along those lines would be more effective.

Yeah the earth definitely needs a lot more than 1 day. I really dont know when earth day is nor have I heard of anyone doing anything for it. The concept is kind of strange to me, whats the point? A day where we take care of the earth and try to do good things for it? When shouldnt we do that?

Earthday Network Homepage
heres the official site , with specific date, and various organizations in different major cities that are putting together events for this.
Another different event, but one that I quite like because of its great musical component is Earthdance International 2006
