It used to be that you turned on the faucet, poured yourself a glass of water and drink it. Sometimes you added ice. Things have certainly changed. Now entire aisles in the supermarket are dedicated to water as a commodity. Bottled water has become a bane for landfills everywhere, yet degradation of city water pipes continues to drive demand.

Around the world, drinking water is one of the scarcest commodities there is. Continuing at the rate of consumption that the first world has, the water crisis will only continue to escalate in the years to come. Already the lack of availability of clean drinking water is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Unlike its colleagues, Earth Water asks its consumers, “If you had the chance, would you change the world?”

Earth Water is a new type of company that is pairing social responsibility with economic viability. As a company, Earth Water donates 100% of it’s profits to the United Nation’s Refugee Agency and increases awareness of the global water crisis with every bottle.

Everything about this business model seems counter to our capitalistic understandings of economy, yet each year this company continues to grow. Drawing from natural springs and using reverse-osmosis processes to distill their water, Earth Water caters to the foodies of the water cooler industry – the people who can taste the difference in their water sources. As our global consciousness as a society grows Earth Water is leading the way in sharing, not exploiting, our brothers and sisters in the third world.

I think bottled water is ridiculous. What a waste of resources.

Earth conscious businesses are the wave of the future, with profits being spent to improve the global community. This echoes the efforts of The Body Shop and their sustainable contracts for goods.

I haven't seen these either, and am curious as to where they can be found too. I definitely agree, SageMother. Businesses who are conscious about environmental concerns will be rewarded in the end.
