Recently, more and more companies have been becoming green. They have been volunteering time and donating money to green causes, using green technology, and encouraging their employees to think green. I believe it’s very important for big corporations to get involved in helping the environment so I’ve compiled a list of five companies who care about environmental issues and some of the things they are doing to help. In no particular order here they are.
1. TD bank financial group. TD bank has contributed over $42 million to more than 16 000 environmental projects over the past 15 years. They contribute to projects and organizations that are dedicated to helping the environment all across the country. Not only do they donate money, but they donate time as well, initiating their own environmental projects, helping employees become involved, and helping to educate the public about environmental issues and how they can help. This must be why TD is the number one bank in Canada.
2. S.C. Johnson has been finding sustainable sources for their products since 1935, long before sustainability was a mainstream issue. The main thing that has set this company apart from others is their green list process. The green list process is an evaluation system of the impact of raw materials on the environment and on human health. They have eliminated 1.8 million pounds of volatile organic compounds from Windex and made their saran wrap PVDC free. They are cutting their reliance on coal powered plants by building plants that rely on natural gas and methane gas pumped from nearby landfills. What’s more impressive is that S.C. Johnson Company will license their green list free of royalties to any corporation that is interested.
3. Honda has been leading the in race of automakers trying to tackle the issues of fuel economy and emissions. As a company they have been performing dedicated research into alternative fuel sources and green technology. Their aim is to be the cleanest and most environmentally friendly vehicle manufacturer and so far they are making excellent progress. From 2000-2005 they reduced emissions from manufacturing as well as from their vehicles by 5% and have promised to drop another 5% by 2010.
4. Price Choppers is a company that is well known for giving back to the community and the environment. They have many charity programs for communities that are innovative and effective. As for their environmental contributions, they are one of the first grocery stores to implement a fee for plastic bags and if you bring reusable bags instead you get money back as a reward.
5. The Body Shop has been advocating for environmental issues since the company was formed. They have a strict no animal testing policy which has been praised by PETA and ask their costumers to bring empty bottles and containers from products back to the store to be refilled instead of throwing it out and buying a new one. The Body Shop website includes a section to raise awareness of environmental issues and asks costumers to spread the word and demand products without animal testing. They are also dedicated to reducing waste and searching for sustainability.
These everyday companies are setting an excellent example for business’s everywhere. As consumers we need to hold companies accountable for the impact they are having on the environment. Take a stand and take your hard earned money away from companies who are not doing their part for the environment.
