Bluefin tuna are considered the tastiest species of tuna, and are especially popular in sushi restaurants. But their numbers in the Atlantic and Mediterranean have plummeted, and biologists say the species in on the verge of collapse. After catching close to 17,000 tonnes of bluefin, the EU has closed the fishery for the year and is acting to curb underreporting of catches. The ban affects all the EU Mediterranean countries, but according to the WWF, France is largely to blame for this year's big harvest, having over-caught their limit. Under EU rules, countries that hadn't reached their quota at the time of the closure can ask to be compensated by countries that over-caught theirs. Meanwhile, sushi-eaters in Japan
may have to resort to horse meat.
