LEDs or Compact Fluorescents?

LED bike lightI’ve given compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs a great deal of research time, tested them for years, and installed one in every available socket in my house. There’s just no arguing for incandescent bulbs anymore- but what about LEDs (light-emitting diodes)? The only place I’ve ever used them is in lights on the front of my bike, but now there are a growing number of LED bulbs available for home or commercial use. Now, taking my experience with LED bike lights, I find it hard to see how they would translate into, for example, the bulb in a reading lamp. Such bulbs are , but unlike CFLs (which now, for the most part, emit nothing but the most warm and cozy colours) LED light tends to be a sterile, “cold,” blue. Also, LED light is more directed than incandescent or fluorescent, producing a straight beam of light that is excellent when riding a bike in the dark but not so good for curling up with a good book. What, then, is the answer? The people at Décor seem to have it- use LEDs for large-scale commercial uses like billboards or casino lighting. They are the most energy-efficient type of lighting, with each bulb lasting up to 100 000 hours. They are more expensive, but if you’re using that much light it’s definitely going to pay off in energy savings. As for light pollution, well, it wasn’t going anywhere anyway, was it? Perhaps LEDs, slightly dimmer than incandescents, will help. And save the indoor lighting jobs for CFLs!
